The Nurse Intern Program at Medical Center Hospital offers nursing students an opportunity to hone technical skills in the real work environment and receive financial compensation. This program is an option for students who have completed the second semester of nursing school. The nurse intern, in conjunction with an RN preceptor, will review, collect, and document patient data; report patient status changes to the RN; reinforce patient and family education; actively participate in the development and implementation of patient plan of care; demonstrate ability to perform technical skills; be able to use effective time management skills in prioritizing and implementation of patient care; demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills; and document and report clearly.

This program will allow nursing students to work on a specific unit to develop a sense of “belonging” and working relationships with nursing staff. The goal of the Nurse Intern Program is to provide a concentrated practice opportunity for the performance of tasks as delegated, with an emphasis on skill repetition and corresponding cognitive functions. Upon graduation from nursing school, the intern will enter the workforce with enhanced skills preparation, making the transition from the role of student to Registered Nurse easier and with greater confidence.
